BSCOSO Community meeting lecture outlines

The importance of accurate diagnosis – Don’t believe what you see in the mouth!
Prof. Dr. Korkmaz Sayinsu and Assist. Prof. Dr. Nese Yoko Gonul – Altinbas University, Faculty of Dentistry, Department of Orthodontics, Istanbul, Turkey.

Accurate diagnosis is essential to ensure the most effective treatment. We should not come to a conclusion until we have proper knowledge of the situation. The important considerations in the diagnostic process will be shown by presenting the diagnosis and treatment procedures of two patients who had undergone orthognatic surgery.

The importance of stable condyle position in diagnosis and treatment planning.
Dr. Ayhan Uyanlar – Private practice in Orthodontics, Antalya, Turkey.

Stable condyle position is the ideal starting point for everything that we do with an occlusion.Identifying discrepancies at the temporomandibular joint level converts orthodontics from tooth aligning approach to a goal oriented treatment philosophy. The principles of this philosophy and why, when and how we deprogramme the patients will be shown.

Orthognathic management of TMD patients: the Brescia experience.
Carlo Tian DSD, MD and Umberto Zanetti – University of Brescia (Italy) post-graduate program in orthodontics and private practice in Brescia (Italy).

We propose our 15 year experience on how we manage tmd patients. From joint stabilization to pre-surgical orthodontics, surgical planning and post-ortho treatments.

Treatment strategies in Class 2 malocclusions with extractions.
Prof. Dr. Korkmaz Sayinsu and Assist. Prof. Dr. Nese Yoko Gonul – Altinbas University, Faculty of Dentistry, Department of Orthodontics, Istanbul, Turkey.

Extraction criteria – Which, when and why? Dealing with the extraction spaces.

Evaluation of short and long-term surgical outcomes and morphological changes by means of superimposition
Eng. Mantas Vaitiekūnas (Lithuania)

Superimposition of pre-surgical and post-surgical datasets may reveal the accuracy of the surgical performance. Whereas superimposition of several post-surgical datasets can show what really happens with the condyles, osteotomy sites and position of the jaws in the long-term follow-up. It is important to make a correct choice of the superimposition techniques in order to have a scientifically significant research. The application of voxel-based superimposition and surface-based superimposition will be discussed in the presentation.

Sponsored sessions:

Dolphin 3D Surgery: from clinical diagnosis to 3D treatment planning.
Alessandro Manzoli – Major Partner CEO – Dolphin Imaging Distributor, Italy.

Dolphin Imaging Accurate 3D Virtual Planning: From 3D Data sent to final splint
– To perform an accurate treatment planning it must be followed a specific workflow that will be discussed in all the details.
– The goal of the lecture is to give you all the information to perform a precise and reliable 3D Virtual planning in Dolphin Imaging.
– It will be shown which are the required 3D Data sets need to make a correct 3D virtual planning in Dolphin Imaging.
– Including details about the 3D Super Imposition of the models, the use of the Dolphin 3D Head Orientation, the use of the Piggy Back Surfaces for a precise 3D Planning.
– Also we will show the different tools available in Dolphin 3D: Airway calculation, 3D Super Impositions, Data Set Optimization.

Dolphin 3D Head Orientation
Dr. Simonas Grybauskas (Lithuania)

Virtual treatment planning has opened new horizons in treating facial deformities however the number of pitfalls and mistakes that possibly can be done is no less than with conventional treatment planning. Face orientation prior to start of treatment planning is one of the key issues that will grant successful planning and treatment of facial asymmetries.

KLS Martin IPS Case Designer: Integration of 3D virtual planning of orthognathic surgery in the daily clinical routine in a user-friendly way
Prof. Gwen R. J. Swennen (Belgium)

Online live demonstration

The integration of the planning process into the treatment pathway in orthognathic interventions. A step guide in implementing a whole-system approach utilizing the IPS Case Designer as the main planning platform.
