Dr. Fernando Melhem Elias

Dr. Fernando Melhem Elias graduated in 1990 from the School of Dentistry at the University of Sao Paulo (USP), the major and first ranked institution of higher learning and research in Brazil. Three years later, he completed the Residency Program in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (OMFS), began his private practice and soon after was qualified to work at two public hospitals, Vila Penteado General Hospital and University Hospital of the University of São Paulo. At the first one, he worked in the Service of Plastic and Maxillofacial Surgery, created and directed the Service of OMFS, as well as the Residency Program in OMFS. At the latter, where he still works to date, he directed the Residency Program in OMFS from 2009 to 2014.

In parallel to his clinical activities, Dr. Fernando obtained his Master’s Degree in 1995, completed his PhD in 2005 and achieved the post of Associated Professor in 2012. As a university professor of OMFS, he worked in two private schools, UNIP (1995-1999) and UNIBAN (1999-2004). Since 2008, he has been teaching at the School of Dentistry of the University of Sao Paulo, as Assistant Professor from 2008 to 2012 and Associate Professor since 2012.

His main research interests are 3D virtual planning in orthognathic surgery and ultrasonography in TMJ disorders, for which he has created innovative diagnosing and planning methods.

Dr. Fernando delivered about 100 lectures and presented more than 100 short communications in scientific meetings. He also defended 3 thesis, wrote 8 book chapters and published over 60 papers, reviews, abstracts and letters.

As a full member of the Brazilian College of OMFS, he was the Scientific Director of the São Paulo Meeting of OMFS in 2014, which gathered almost 650 participants, including 72 national and 6 international speakers, with 100 lectures given and 362 short communications presented.

In his private practice, he has been dedicating to provide clinical care in almost all fields of the specialty, with particular interest in orthognathic surgery, facial trauma and temporomandibular joint disorders.
